Personalized Content – Good or Bad?

July 19, 2013

postpicPersonalized content isn’t as great as you might think it is. Sure, it’s fine receiving Google news headlines or YouTube videos that match topics that you like, but it becomes ridiculous if you haven’t visited these sites in a while and all it shows when you return to them is a collection of media that is overly personalized. For example, lets say you click on a YouTube video about Call of Duty gameplay, all you see the next time you visit the site is game footage from not so talented gamers or game culture vids. Scrolling down to the categories or clicking on the category options on the sidebar is one way to navigate through this clutter, but even these results will be affected by your browsing history, at least from my experience.

Personalized content narrows what you are exposed to and it’s not a good thing. If all it did was limit the type of content you can see, ( more of what you like and less of what you don’t) then it just gets boring. If the filtering prevents information from reaching you, it has consequences that are far reaching, at the extreme. Everyone will be in their own information bubble, disconnected from everyone else, which is the opposite of what the internet is supposed to be.
