The Problem with Auction-type Work Sites Like Thumbtack

March 17, 2015

I recently discovered Thumbtack – a website which lets people hire businesses or freelance creatives to work on various projects. It is similar to other auction-type sites like oDesk and Elance. Independent contractors like myself can bid on job offers posted by potential clients, and these clients select the best offer. I have yet to successfully low-bid other writers.

Thumbtack added another element which makes it even more annoying than other websites in this industry – credits. It costs 8 credits just to send a quote to a client requesting a copywriting project. This is after predicting what potential competitors will bid on the project and submitting an offer.

Thumbtack should get rid of the credit system they’ve implemented and earn revenue by charging a percentage of the bid accepted by the client.
