Natural Ways to Maintain a Mosquito-Free Room

Keeping a mosquito-free room can be challenging, especially during the spring and summer months. Doors and windows need to be inspected and things which attract mosquitoes need to be removed. Finally, mosquito nets and mosquito traps should be set up.

Step 1: Prevent Mosquitoes From Entering the House

Secure the structure of the house by closing windows and doors and fixing damaged screens and walls. During warm weather, make sure that open windows have a mesh screen that is secure. The same is true for door screens. Vents should also be covered with a fine mesh to prevent mosquitoes from entering the room. Replace screens or cover holes with duct tape. Any holes or cracks in the wall should be filled with caulk.

Step 2: Address Environmental Conditions Favorable for Mosquitoes

Next, remove things in and around the house that can attract mosquitoes, such as standing water. Plant watering trays collect water that drains through the pot, and it can remain stagnant for days. It’s a good idea to empty the tray frequently. Mosquitoes are also attracted to open trash cans. Covering the trash cans with a lid and taking the trash out more frequently will help prevent mosquito infestation.

Another important factor to consider is the humidity level. Mosquitoes are attracted to high humidity. Reducing the humidity in the house can reduce the prevalence of mosquitoes as well. One way to lower the humidity is by using a dehumidifier or air conditioning unit.

Step 3: Use Natural Mosquito Repellents

After the house is secure and favorable conditions are removed, place natural mosquito repellents around the bedroom. Citronella candles are great at repelling mosquitoes. Place them near the doors and windows. Another natural mosquito repellent is lemon eucalyptus oil. It can be applied to towels and hung near the windows. The oil can also be used as a lotion for the skin.

Step 4: Set Up Mosquito Nets and Mosquito Traps

One last defense against mosquito infestation is the use of mosquito nets. Cover windows with mosquito nets to prevent mosquitoes from entering the room. Another way to prevent mosquitoes from entering the house is to place mosquito traps outside. Mosquito traps emit light and dispense a scent to attract mosquitoes into the trap and away from the house.

Don’t let mosquitoes invade your room and ruin your sleep. By following these steps, you should be on your way to a mosquito-free night. Remember, secure the structure of the house to prevent mosquitoes from entering, remove standing water, and cover trash cans. Finally, place citronella candles and set up mosquito traps.
